Hairball Control in Cats

Hairballs form in the intestinal tract of the cat by mucus "gluing" individual hairs together to form a ball which then acts as an obstruction within the digestive system.

There are two main ways of controlling hairballs in cats; the first is to feed a diet with a high cellulose content, and the second technique is to include the enzyme bromelain in the food.

Cellulose acts by scraping the hair from the digestive tract so that the hair is expelled from the body with the stools. The disadvantage of this method is due to the abrasive action of the cellulose which irritates the wall of the intestine if the cellulose level is high or the use of the food is prolonged. This scratching of the intestinal wall can be diagnosed by the presence of blood in the stools.

Bromelain is a natural enzyme derived from pineapples, and acts by digesting the mucus that binds the individual hairs within the hairball together. This then allows the hairs to be passed as usual with the stools without any scratching or irritation of the intestinal wall.

The use of bromelain as an enzyme for the control of hairballs in cats is patented, which means the only food we can supply using this technique is the Nutrience Elite Formula hairball control food. Vivacé Premium Australian Pet Food

Vivacé food products were originally developed for sale in Japan, and for some years, Honshu, the main island of Japan, was the only place this food was available. But being Australian by design and manufacture meant that in time an Australian version of this unique food found its way into Australian kennels, and with the passing of time more and more dogs are exhibiting the advantages of having been reared on this food.

So what is it that makes Vivacé so different?

Vivacé represents a radical departure from the conventional way of manufacturing dry food for dogs; the following criteria explain some of the differences…

1. The Vivacé philosophy is to only produce food that is nutritionally "balanced and complete", an often used phrase that rarely truly means what it says! Many manufacturers, and particularly the US giants, claim a food is nutritionally balanced and complete by attempting to satisfy the calculated daily minimum requirement for each nutrient. Unfortunately, this technique does not work because it does not take into consideration the relationship between nutrients and

their rate of consumption in the body of the animal relative to energy use. Furthermore, the "daily minimum requirement" is just that, the minimum required, whereas if we are going to successfully breed and show at a high level of performance, we should be feeding the optimum levels of nutrients. In Vivacé diets, nutrients are combined in specific ratios to one another, and this whole nutrient package is then combined in balance to the energy content of the food. This means that the supply of essential nutrients is not only complete, but also balanced to the usage rate within the body.

2. The Vivacé tradition is to only use premium quality raw ingredients that are drawn from the dog's natural food source. The reason for this is that many manufacturers view the dog as nature's garbage disposers, and will accordingly use whatever raw ingredients are cheap, regardless of their suitability to the species. The benefit of using ingredients that are natural to the dog lies in the dog's ability to extract the necessary nutrients from the food. All too often we see dogs eating large quantities of food only to produce large quantities of stools, or alternatively we see dogs eating highly concentrated food only to have them pass a large portion of the protein and other nutrients in their urine. Where raw ingredients are matched to the target species, the results are highly efficient digestion, plus highly efficient utilization of the actual nutrients within the body. This means less total nutrients are required in the food, less total food is required in the dog, and the dog is healthier, happier, and looks better at the same time.

3. Unparalleled economy: intensive livestock producers in many disciplines the world over have known for decades that the most economical method of feeding animals is to feed a complete diet where the nutrients are balanced to the energy content of the food. Our dogs are no different in this respect, whereby the complete and balanced profile of the Vivacé food actually reduces nutritional stress in the dog. Nutritional stress is the result of nutrient imbalance, irrespective of whether the nutrient balance is too little, or too much, and reducing this stress actually results in the dog requiring less total nutrients. Stress reduction also aids the dog in many other ways…. it allows the dog to be what it was bred to be! Many breeders are amazed at the clarity of coat colour in dogs that have been fed Vivacé food, whereas others are amazed at the reduction in the incidence of alopecia in dogs with a history of this condition. Good health comes from the inside out and removing nutritional factors as a limitation to the expression of the genetic potential that you have taken so much time, effort and expense to create is the single biggest step you can take in reducing the economic burden of dog ownership.

4. Vivacé products are safe. Only the finest ingredients are used and these are subject to rigorous laboratory testing to guarantee purity, freshness and quality. Furthermore, Vivacé is 100% guaranteed. If you are not completely satisfied with the quality and value of the food, we will replace the food at our cost or refund your money in full. We will do everything in our power to ensure that there is absolutely no vestige of risk for you or your dogs from feeding Vivacé food products.

5. Last, and by no means least, Vivacé has a proven track record not only within the select few Australian kennels that have enjoyed the edge this food has given them, but also throughout Japan (one of the World's toughest markets) and South East Asia. It is no coincidence that it has taken so long for you to hear about these products; we have been refining and testing and double checking all aspects of our technology so that we can be absolutely positive that this food will be everything you expect it to be and we know it to be.
